I hate to start an answer with a question, but why would anyone think that Rey is “nobody”? Is it because the evil and ruthless murderer and Dark Force user Kylo Ren said so? Why would anyone find him credible? Still, there was so much complaining about this after The Last Jedi, that an answer is warranted.
To answer the question directly, if Rey ends up being from a notable lineage, the “nobody” line becomes either a lie by Kylo while trying to seduce her to the Dark Side (and probably loves her, as well) or an example of his own misunderstanding of the situation.
Lucasfilm likely had been dangling phantom possibilities of Rey’s bloodline in front of us three reasons:
- That is how the stories have gone so far. Anakin was created by Darth Plagus (or the Force itself, depending on your view). Luke and Leia come from Anakin. With that, it would seem the next main hero should be a Skywalker, or Solo or Kenobi, etc.
- We all probably want her to be some sort of continuation of what we know. It is easily relatable and adds a bit of ongoing continuity that just feels comfy.
- It would just be so cool if she is like a Palpatine, or Skywalker or something like that. In the old books, now just Legends, Han and Leia had twins. How awesome would that be if we go from the love/hate father-son struggle to the love/hate sibling struggle? It would definitely elevate the emotional impact of everything.
Ultimately, I see no reason for an overt “nobody” line given to us halfway through the story, other than the authors setting us up for a twist. That is good, modern writing, in my opinion. The other possibility is that Disney knows we are expecting her to be from someone, so the unexpected twist is that she is not and Kylo was telling the truth.
One quick theory that is important here, is the once-crazy theory that now fits most of the events pretty well. This theory is that Kylo could not completely kill the good in him, so this good became a second entity in the form of a child in a random woman, who gave birth and eventually sold her off. Or the same type of situation but possibility from Luke instead when he tried to close himself off from the Force. I am not saying that any of this is what happened, but there are a few interesting videos on YouTube that make the theories seem not so crazy. In these cases, she could be from no one and still be a Solo or Skywalker. Kind of cool, if you ask me.
In any case, haters are going to hate and the rest of us will just keep on having fun with it all.
On last thing that leans heavy toward her not being from a random person: Luke’s lightsaber was equally connected to her and Kylo. I bet she has Skywalker blood in her…somehow. I can’t wait for this movie to come out!
